Shannon Mattern

Hello! I’m the Director of Creative Research at the Metropolitan New York Library Council, a state-founded, member-supported, non-profit network connecting hundreds of libraries and archives. I coordinate Metro’s Cross-Reference Coalition, an experimental school exploring exuberantly interdisciplinary themes through the city’s public knowledge resources (we’ve got a new website coming soon!); and continue to build upon on my quarter-century of published research. I previously served on Metro’s board of directors and later as its president. In Spring 2025 I was named the Kluge Chair in Modern Culture at the Library of Congress; and in Summer 2025 I was invited to serve as the Design Indexer in residence at the Cooper Hewitt, Smithsonian Design Museum.
